TOOLS WE USE

Six things we actually use

Three tools that help us build and check this site, and three that keep our own work private while we do it. Every link in this section is an affiliate link, and each one says so underneath it.

Tool · AI transcription

Notta AI

Turns recordings into text and summaries. We run interviews through it, then check the transcript against our own first impression of the speaker.

Tool · Game servers

Godlike.Host

Server hosting for Minecraft, CS and VPS. The game on this page runs in your browser; this is for when you want a server of your own.

Tool · Stock art

VectorStock

The illustrations on this site came from here, including the figures in both field guides. Vectors are easier to restyle than photos.

Tool · Online privacy

NordVPN

We check this page from a lot of different places, and a plain connection tells every server on the way where you are. This is what we keep running while we do it.

Tool · Passwords

NordPass

Running a site like this one means a growing pile of logins. This is where ours live, and why we stopped reusing the same password everywhere.

Tool · VPN

Surfshark

A second VPN we keep for the same reason we keep a second phone around: when one route goes slow or blocks us, we switch and look again.

01

How to play

Read one passage, choose Human or AI, then reveal its known source. Finish all eight passages to see your score.

02

What your score means

  • 0–2 Most labels fooled you; style alone is a weak signal.
  • 3–5 You caught some cues and missed others.
  • 6–7 You matched most known labels.
  • 8 You matched every known label in this round.

03

How the set is built

Set design updated October 12, 2026: 32 short human comments published on Hacker News in 2015 or 2020, plus 32 AI-written passages matched for topic, length, era, and informal forum voice. Choose Classic, 2020 Mix, or the Full Pool. Every round draws four from each side, shuffles all eight, and never repeats an item within that round. Human provenance and year appear after each guess.

04

This page is not a detector.

It is a guessing game with known labels. It does not analyze visitor text, estimate authorship, or prove whether arbitrary writing came from a person or a model.
