HUMAN OR AI · MEMORY CHECK

Human or AI: does remembering details prove someone is human?

By Guess Human AI · First published · Updated

No. Remembering a detail shows that it was retained or retrieved. It does not tell you who wrote the message. Play six short cases and choose a useful next step.

What should you do with the remembered detail?

Recall, continuity and verification are different

A message can repeat a name because the name appears earlier in the conversation. It can also copy a note. Neither tells us whether the writer is a person or a model. In this exercise, ask what information is available, what was revised and whether a source outside the conversation has actually been checked.

A repeated seat number is one claim; a checked booking record is a separate evidence step

How to play and read your score

A round randomly draws six different cases from twelve original fictional scenarios. Choose one supported action for each case. A supported choice earns one point; other choices earn none. Answers lock after selection, and feedback explains the evidence. There is no timer or speed bonus.

0–2: Review what was stated, revised or left unknown. 3–4: You separated some kinds of evidence; watch for repeated sources. 5–6: You consistently used the evidence supplied in this round. These practice bands are editorial choices, not a validated measure of memory or authorship detection.

Does forgetting a detail prove AI?

No. A missing detail is a reason to ask a connected clarifying question, not to assign an identity. Avoid silently filling in a color, number or date that was never provided. If a detail matters, check it against a relevant record when one is legitimately available.

Should the original or corrected detail be remembered?

Use the latest explicit correction while retaining enough context to explain the change. “Platform 3, correction: 5” supports platform 5. It does not support accusing the speaker of a hidden contradiction. Similarly, an announced deadline extension changes the plan rather than making every later use of the new date a failure.

Keep the initial instruction in context, apply its explicit correction, then check the current plan

Do two repeated statements count as two sources?

Not when both trace back to the same statement or witness. Two messages can agree because one copied the other. Ask whether the second message introduces an independent observation; do not count repetitions as separate verification.

All twelve worked cases

Review these after a round. They are fictional practice examples, not evidence about a real person.

The repeated name

My teammate is Noor.

Yes, Noor is the teammate I mentioned.

Question: What would move beyond repeating the name?

Supported answer: Compare a relevant detail with an independent record. Check a relevant detail against a record independent of this conversation. Repetition only shows that the name was retained.

A corrected platform

Meet me at platform 3.

Correction: platform 5.

I will wait at platform 5.

Question: Which platform follows the latest explicit instruction?

Supported answer: Platform 5, because the instruction was corrected. Platform 5 replaced platform 3. Retaining the correction is continuity, not proof of human identity.

The unseen ticket

My ticket says seat 18.

Later: I remember, seat 18.

Question: Has the ticket itself been verified?

Supported answer: No: the number was repeated, not independently checked. No ticket or independent booking record has been checked. A remembered number can remain unverified.

A forgotten color

I left my umbrella at the café.

I cannot remember its color.

Question: What is the useful next move?

Supported answer: Ask for another checkable detail about the umbrella. Ask a connected clarifying question or consult a relevant record. A memory gap alone does not identify an author.

A quoted claim

Lee said the room is 204.

I remember Lee saying 204.

Question: How many independent sources for the actual room are shown?

Supported answer: Only one claim is represented; no independent confirmation. Both messages trace back to Lee’s claim. Recalling a source does not create an independent confirmation.

An uncertain time

I think the train left around six.

I have not checked the timetable.

Question: What should remain uncertain?

Supported answer: The exact departure time, pending a relevant check. The departure time is still an estimate in this account. Retain the uncertainty instead of silently upgrading it to a verified fact.

The latest address

The parcel goes to apartment 12.

Please change that to apartment 21.

No further changes.

Question: Which detail should a follow-up use?

Supported answer: Apartment 21, the revised instruction. The explicit update supersedes the old apartment number. Following it demonstrates use of the conversation, not identity.

The copied checklist

The list says: keys, badge, bottle.

I copied the list: keys, badge, bottle.

Question: Does matching the list establish unaided human memory?

Supported answer: No: the stated source is a copied list. The message explicitly says the list was copied. Successful recall and use of a reference are different claims; neither settles identity.

The changed deadline

The draft was due Monday.

The client extended it to Wednesday.

Question: Does using Wednesday necessarily mean the speaker forgot Monday?

Supported answer: No: Wednesday reflects the stated extension. The deadline changed through a stated event. An updated detail can be correct even though it differs from the original.

A request to check

I remember the meeting being at the library.

I might be mixing it up with last week.

Question: What would help resolve the location?

Supported answer: Check the dated invitation for this meeting. Check the relevant invitation for this meeting. Confidence or a new unrelated trivia question would not verify the location.

The same witness

Sam saw a red bike.

I asked Sam again; Sam still says red.

Question: What has the second message added?

Supported answer: A repeated statement from the same witness. It shows that the same witness repeated the claim. It is not a second independent witness or verification of the bike.

A missing quantity

I put some cups in the box.

The box has not been opened since.

Question: Can the exact number of cups be recovered from these messages?

Supported answer: No: the initial count is missing. The initial quantity was never stated. Good continuity cannot recover information that the account never supplied.

How this set was built

Set design dated October 18, 2026: twelve original AI-assisted fictional cases across repeated names, corrected instructions, unseen records, missing details, copied references and uncertainty. Every case has its own question, three action choices and an editorially supported answer. None is a quotation from a human participant, a research result or a model benchmark.

This page is not an AI detector. It does not identify authors, examine uploads or connect you to a chat partner. Game choices run locally. The page uses the site's existing analytics, described in the privacy policy.

Background and related play

We reviewed Human or Not on October 18, 2026 for its short-task-then-judgment structure. Our exercise uses prepared cases rather than live conversations. Human or Not? research supplies background about conversational Turing games, not validation of this Memory Check.
